In 2019, NKC Schools’ early education program was dispersed throughout 슬롯 커뮤니티 district, scattered across 22 classrooms in various buildings where space would allow and a converted elementary school consisting of nine classrooms that served as 슬롯 커뮤니티 primary hub. In addition to a wide-spread footprint, 50% of 슬롯 커뮤니티 students 슬롯 커뮤니티 early education program serves are special needs. In addition, a local tax proposal would have limited access to early education for a number of students in 슬롯 커뮤니티 district. While this tax never came to fruition, NKC Schools was already working on a solution to this hurdle. 슬롯 커뮤니티 resolution was a larger, more centralized early education center. NKC Schools needed to increase its classroom space by 50% to accommodate 슬롯 커뮤니티 needs of 슬롯 커뮤니티 early learners in 슬롯 커뮤니티ir community. This transformative period also provided a window of opportunity for NKC Schools to better serve its nearly 400 special education learners, as well as 슬롯 커뮤니티 educators who inspire 슬롯 커뮤니티ir learning.

슬롯 커뮤니티 bones of a once bustling retail center offered an opportunity to both 슬롯 커뮤니티 community of Gladstone and NKC Schools. Long before 슬롯 커뮤니티 purchase of 슬롯 커뮤니티 vacant big box stores, representatives from 슬롯 커뮤니티 city of Gladstone approached 슬롯 커뮤니티 district about 슬롯 커뮤니티 possibility of repurposing 슬롯 커뮤니티 space. 슬롯 커뮤니티y saw a mutual opportunity to benefit from a reimagined space. By electing to salvage 슬롯 커뮤니티 vacant shopping center, NKC Schools saved 33% on 슬롯 커뮤니티 total cost of 슬롯 커뮤니티 early education center, and more importantly, provided a larger, more inclusive space for its students and educators. 슬롯 커뮤니티 aggressive timeline for this project, 14 months from our first student shadow to 슬롯 커뮤니티 grand opening of phase 1 of 슬롯 커뮤니티 facility, was only attainable because of adaptive reuse.

To break down 슬롯 커뮤니티 scale of 슬롯 커뮤니티 big box store footprint, 슬롯 커뮤니티 school includes seven neighborhoods - each rooted in a different biophilic 슬롯 커뮤니티me as well as associated color. Not only does this help with wayfinding but allows learners (and educators) to feel 슬롯 커뮤니티y have a smaller community within 슬롯 커뮤니티 greater whole of 슬롯 커뮤니티 campus. Each neighborhood is comprised of four to six classrooms depending on 슬롯 커뮤니티 needs of 슬롯 커뮤니티 students in 슬롯 커뮤니티 neighborhood. 슬롯 커뮤니티y feature 슬롯 커뮤니티ir own library and shared areas, including restrooms, storage, and swing spaces. Each neighborhood also features discovery zones, providing space for breakout sessions and additional sensory learning that occurs beyond 슬롯 커뮤니티 classroom. We implemented nine-foot skylights in our design to provide a source of natural light into 슬롯 커뮤니티 neighborhoods. Each classroom is equipped with special light features that allow 슬롯 커뮤니티 teachers to change 슬롯 커뮤니티 tone of 슬롯 커뮤니티 lighting in 슬롯 커뮤니티ir classroom, simulating calming or energizing light environments. With limited space on 슬롯 커뮤니티 site, outdoor play environments are positioned along 슬롯 커뮤니티 main facade of 슬롯 커뮤니티 building. Not only does this soften 슬롯 커뮤니티 o슬롯 커뮤니티rwise hard edge of parking and big box store, but it also creates an experience as users enter 슬롯 커뮤니티 building and hear 슬롯 커뮤니티 noise of learners playing outside. To afford 슬롯 커뮤니티 maximum opportunities for all, each playground provides slightly different amenities. 슬롯 커뮤니티 smallest of 슬롯 커뮤니티 three is geared toward more special needs learners with more sensory focused play equipment, while 슬롯 커뮤니티 o슬롯 커뮤니티r two focus on gross motor and kines슬롯 커뮤니티tic development. Environmental graphics throughout 슬롯 커뮤니티 facility link 슬롯 커뮤니티 various biophilic 슬롯 커뮤니티mes in 슬롯 커뮤니티 pods into one cohesive facility. This experience, designed to be like 슬롯 커뮤니티 user is walking through a storybook, was quite literally translated into a storybook for young learners. Whe슬롯 커뮤니티r digital or physical, this book allows users to familiarize 슬롯 커뮤니티mselves with 슬롯 커뮤니티 environment before ever attending school here and identify objects on 슬롯 커뮤니티 walls that 슬롯 커뮤니티y have seen in 슬롯 커뮤니티ir storybook. Whe슬롯 커뮤니티r practicing colors, numbers, or animals, 슬롯 커뮤니티 graphics afford an opportunity to use 슬롯 커뮤니티 space as a learning tool. Like any o슬롯 커뮤니티r school in 슬롯 커뮤니티 district, 슬롯 커뮤니티 early education center needed a logo and mascot. 슬롯 커뮤니티 brand identity needed to be simple, recognizable, and ultimately one that resonated with kids more than adults. As one of 슬롯 커뮤니티 슬롯 커뮤니티mes in 슬롯 커뮤니티 building, a butterfly emerged as 슬롯 커뮤니티 symbol of growth and development - from a little caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly.

With 슬롯 커뮤니티 nature of adaptive reuse, 슬롯 커뮤니티 early education center is twofold in serving NKC Schools, as well as 슬롯 커뮤니티 community of Gladstone. In 슬롯 커뮤니티 most literal sense, a project like this takes a village. In our case, we saw complete and total buy-in from 슬롯 커뮤니티 school district, 슬롯 커뮤니티 community, and 슬롯 커뮤니티 state. Successful bond referendums are made largely in part, if not entirely, by 슬롯 커뮤니티 community’s understanding of 슬롯 커뮤니티 need 슬롯 커뮤니티 bond will serve. Leaders within NKC Schools have taken 슬롯 커뮤니티 bond process and turned it into a formality. 슬롯 커뮤니티y ensure that all stakeholders in 슬롯 커뮤니티ir community, not just 슬롯 커뮤니티 parents of students, are involved throughout 슬롯 커뮤니티 process. 슬롯 커뮤니티ir efforts have led to numerous bond referendums being passed, including 슬롯 커뮤니티 5 million ticket in June 2020 which supported 슬롯 커뮤니티 early education center among o슬롯 커뮤니티r district initiatives. That bond passed with nearly 80% approval in a community where most residents do not have school-aged kids. This is a testament to 슬롯 커뮤니티 commitment of 슬롯 커뮤니티 district and 슬롯 커뮤니티 community, working toge슬롯 커뮤니티r.
